Weather performance
The carbonised surface slows moisture uptake and weathers slowly. For exterior longevity in Australian conditions, specify a breathable, non-film-forming oil or cream sealer to regulate moisture and support UV moderation. Use stainless fasteners and detail for drainage and ventilation.
Natural patina
Outdoors, the char will gradually soften through weathering, developing a subtle silvered sheen while maintaining the timber’s integrity, reflecting the patinated character of the Hakuu Patina Yakisugi finish.

Hakuu is crafted from Japanese Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica), also known as Japanese cedar. The authentic shou sugi ban process creates a durable charred layer that protects the face of the board from sun and rain. Sugi is lightweight and stable, making it an excellent choice for exterior japanese cladding, providing a unique aesthetic that develops a beautiful patina over time.
On-site cutting is not recommended for Hakuu. All boards are precisely finished at the factory to protect the char layer and ensure a consistent appearance. If site cuts are unavoidable, contact Studio Tsukuru for specific guidelines and a matching touch-up system. Sealing every exposed end is essential to prevent moisture ingress.
The charred surface of Hakuu is stable under normal use. However, in high-contact areas with continuous friction, minor carbon transfer to light-coloured fabrics may occur. For such areas, applying a breathable, non-film-forming oil or cream sealer can help stabilise the surface and minimise carbon transfer. For interior applications, a sealed finish can ensure a cleaner touch.
Hakuu is designed to perform well in various Australian climate conditions. In high-UV or coastal environments, regular maintenance (typically every 3-10 years) is important. This includes gentle washing to remove salt and grime, and re-oiling or re-sealing as needed to maintain the protective char layer.
