About this project
Tucked into a leafy street in Glen Iris, in Melbourne’s inner east, this family home is wrapped in Hakuu Black yakisugi: sugi boards charred in Japan, then brushed and finished in a deep black coating that lets the grain show through the char. The project was completed in May 2026.
The boards run vertically, with the fixings set in clean, even rows. From the street the facade reads almost matte; up close the brushed texture comes alive, catching the light differently through the day. That depth is what charred timber offers where painted cladding stays flat.
Charring is a centuries-old Japanese technique that pre-weathers the surface: the char sheds water and UV, and the finish asks little in return, an occasional wash down and a recoat when the colour eventually softens.
