Spacious grandeur
BARN
About this project
A working shed on a forested block in rural Japan, clad in Sumii yakisugi laid horizontally. The build keeps its palette to three materials: charred boards, sheet roofing and a concrete apron, with a sliding door in uncoated timber that will silver over the years against the black wall.
It is a good demonstration of why hard-brushed Sumii boards make sense on utility buildings as well as houses: the charred surface sheds weather while asking little in return.
